NGOs and social Organizations in Goa – A research on the number of active (registered and not registered) NGOs and social Organisations in Goa – identifying strengths and needs
India is the country with the largest number of (active) NGOs in the world – a study of 2009 showed that there are more than 2 million NGOs in India.
What is the situation in Goa?
The number of NGOs working in Goa is difficult to assess, after our research we could identify more than 200 NGOs, including Schools for Special Children, Old Age Homes and Orphanages. NGOs in Goa have been undertaking and implementing various programmes and activities for the development of the communities of the area. NGOs working in Goa are mostly implementing the programmes based on Child Education, Child Rights, Women Empowerment, Environment Protection, Health Awareness, Art, Craft and Heritage Protection. Social organisations are undertaking projects for welfare and improvement of the status of deprived and backward communities. The main focus of NGOs in Goa is based on Poverty Relief and they are running programmes to improve the living standard and health care matters of local communities.
What problems did our research identify?
The online presence of at least half of the NGOs is not enough to get proper contact information etc.
While our research we also realized that there are many NGOs working for the same aim, with similar methods without working together. We believe that connecting them would make their functioning easier and more effective.
What are we planning to do?
First of all we want to identify all active NGOs in Goa. We want to classify their different fields of work and operation modes to understand their strengths and needs, and what problems NGOs in Goa are facing. Therefore we developed a Questionnaire, based on the SWOT analysis system. We want to include all active NGOs, Old Age Homes, Schools for Special Children, Orphanages and Organizations working in the fields of Education, Child Rights, Community Development, Women Empowerment, Environment, Animal Rescue, Health Awareness, Art, Craft, Heritage Protection and projects for welfare and improvement of the status of deprived and backward communities. Further we are also thinking to involve the local Panchayats to understand their needs and wishes for improvements.
After contacting and interviewing all mentioned Institutions we plan to write a research paper about the results. Further we want to create an online blog, where the Institutions can come into contact with each other, to share and help.
The Blog will contain:
- A list of all Institutions/NGOs
- Contact and background information of each Institution/NGO
- Volunteer section
- Background information for Institutions/NGOs (ex. Child Rights Act, How to register a NGO etc.)
- Place for Institutions/NGOs to share, ask and help
- Publishing of the research paper
Why do we want to do this?
The INSPIRE TRUST wants to provide the platform and support what’s needed for NGOs to connect, partner, share, inspire, and multiply their contributions to solve local issues.
- To provide a space for open exchange and discussions among the Institutions/NGOs
- To provide a space to learn from and collaborate with each other and wider networks
- To bring NGOs in contact with Volunteers
- To provide a sharing- space of ideas among NGOs
- To provide free and easy access to a wide variety of free informational sources
- To provide more options for Funding Agencies to select the right choice of NGO to support and work with
The online Blog and its contents are committed to the dissemination of information so that communities can keep on growing at a sustainable rate while improving the quality of life of the marginalized sectors of Goan society. By being able to bridge the gap between the need and the availability of information, we will be able to increase the overall standard of living across Goa.
As the groundwork, the identification of NGOs and the development of the questionnaires is completed; we now want to get in contact with each and every NGO and institution to interview them and understand their specific needs.
To implement this and to create the website we need funds to cover costs for at least 1 more employee, travel, administrative costs and the expenses of the website itself.
